Executive Director of TLTC Named

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kathy Takayama as Executive Director of the University of Maryland Teaching and Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) effective September 23, 2019.

Kathy is currently a Senior Science Education Fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in Chevy Chase. In this role, she has worked with HHMI to develop strategies that assist institutions in building capacity toward inclusive excellence for all students, empowering faculty and administrators and cultivating successful incentives that amplify the collective strengths and contributions of all stakeholders to foster successful learning environments. 

Prior to her work at HHMI, Kathy served as director of the Center for Advanced Teaching and Learning through Research at Northeastern University. Her work at Northeastern included establishing a diversity and inclusivity strategy for the center and integrating that strategy through programming and activities. She created new partnerships between departments, enhanced the graduate student orientation to foster belonging and value to the identities of all graduate students, developed a "train-the-trainer" program for science faculty and built a community where ongoing scholarly exchange was a core value for all educators and learners. 

Before Northeastern, she served as the associate provost and founding executive director for the Columbia University Center for Teaching and Learning, where she developed strong partnerships within the Libraries, departments, schools, and administrative offices to create sustainable programs serving the ongoing needs of the teaching and learning community across all of Columbia’s 16 schools and colleges.

Kathy also spent several years at Brown University, first holding a joint appointment at the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning and the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. After promotion to executive director, she led a major effort to enhance the center’s reach and impact by establishing a significant expansion of new programs and partnerships across the institution to address the ongoing professional development needs of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Prior to her time at Brown, Kathy was a professor of microbiology and molecular biology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. She has held national and international leadership positions as President of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and selection as a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and has served as external advisor for curricular enhancement and professional development to universities and programs throughout the US and in Europe, East Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Kathy holds a Ph. D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rutgers University Medical School, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

I would like to thank the search committee, chaired by Dr. Elizabeth Beise, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, for their outstanding work in identifying a strong pool of highly qualified candidates for this position.

I am especially grateful to Dr. Scott Roberts, who has served as Interim Director for the past year while we conducted this search. His excellent work as head of TLTC team this year, made the transition of leadership with the departure of Ben Bederson very smooth and has been first rate and seamless throughout this interim year. I hope and trust that Scott will continue to make his usual remarkable impact on teaching quality and student success across campus as we go forward under Kathy’s leadership. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Kathy Takayama to the University of Maryland and the TLTC. I am confident that she will lead us with great distinction in her new role as Executive Director.
